Haveil Havalim #248 — Welcome to Tevet

Sunday, 20 December 2009

Founded by Soccer Dad, Haveil Havalim is a carnival of Jewish blogs — a weekly collection of Jewish & Israeli blog highlights, tidbits and points of interest collected from blogs all around the world. It’s hosted by different bloggers each week and coordinated by Jack. The term ‘Haveil Havalim,’ which means “Vanity of Vanities,” is from Qoheleth, (Ecclesiastes) which was written by King Solomon. King Solomon built the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and later on got all bogged down in materialism and other ‘excesses’ and realized that it was nothing but ‘hevel,’ or in English, ‘vanity.’”

    Dear “Frume Sara,”
Thanks so much for including me on your Haveil Havalim entry!
Could you please, however, correct the typo in your description: “Chaddishe Farbrengen”
    It should be “Chassidishe Farbrengen”.
BTW, Chassidishe is Yiddish for “chassidic”.
    Thanks again.

My pleasure. SO glad that you are back 🙂

I had a great time pulling together this week’s edition. It forced me to take a lot of time and really read through a lot of posts — and some that really challenged my own perspective.

  11. Monday, 21 December 2009 3:34 am

    Thanks for the link!

Funny that you listed the post under ‘Judaism’ and not ‘Israel.’ I wrote it as a political/historical piece but on retrospect you’re probably right; it’s impossible for us to think about Jerusalem without acknowledging our religious connection. Otherwise Jerusalem is just a place. Which it isn’t.

      Dear Morey,

I really vacillated on this one. Ultimately, I concluded what you have — Jerusalem ISN’T a place!

      Thanks for stopping by.
